Our Context – Our Craft: Designing Learning that Matters – By Jenna Dore and Kelly Mills
“The day celebrated one of the College’s greatest strengths – the expertise and generosity of its staff”
At Marist-Sion College, we believe that meaningful learning begins with meaningful teaching. As part of our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement, staff recently participated in our Professional Learning Day, Our Context, Our Craft, a collaborative opportunity to explore innovative teaching practices that strengthen student engagement, agency and learning outcomes.
The day brought together educators from across the College to reflect on a fundamental question: How do we design learning that truly matters? Through a series of workshops led by Marist-Sion College staff, participants explored practical approaches to curriculum design, student voice, feedback, engagement and classroom culture.
The professional learning was grounded in the understanding that students learn best when they can see purpose and relevance in their learning. A key focus was the relationship between contextualisation and student agency. Teachers explored how connecting learning to real-world contexts, student interests, future pathways and authentic problems can increase engagement, and create opportunities for students to take greater ownership of their learning.
A common thread throughout the day was the concept of The Power of … Each workshop highlighted a different aspect of effective teaching practice.
Staff examined The Power of Presence, exploring how strong relationships, responsiveness, and teacher clarity can create highly engaging learning environments. The Power of Design focused on intentional curriculum planning and the role of vocabulary in helping students access and succeed in learning. The Power of Feedback explored how timely, specific and actionable feedback can empower students to take ownership of their progress.
Workshops on The Power of Voice and The Power of Gamification encouraged staff to consider how classrooms can foster curiosity, participation, confidence and psychological safety. Across all sessions, a consistent message emerged: meaningful learning occurs when students feel invested in their learning journey.
Importantly, the day also celebrated one of the College’s greatest strengths – the expertise and generosity of its staff. By sharing effective practices, reflecting on challenges, and learning from one another, teachers strengthened their collective capacity to create learning experiences that are engaging, purposeful, and responsive to the needs of every student.
The learning from Our Context, Our Craft will continue to influence classroom practice across the College. As we work towards our strategic priorities, including strengthening student engagement and fostering learner agency, we remain committed to refining our craft and ensuring that every student experiences learning that is relevant, challenging, and meaningful.
We are proud of the professionalism, passion, and commitment demonstrated by our staff throughout the day and thank all presenters and participants for their contribution. Through a shared commitment to growth and innovation, Marist-Sion College continues to build a culture of excellence in teaching and learning for the benefit of every student.
